Dear Sid,

[…] I got an awful jarring while in Boston last fall. […] The modern painter, as represented at the Academy show in Phila., has nothing to say – in this respect he is a farce! But his technical powers are paramount, and just here is where we, you, I and all of the Pyle school fall down hopelessly. None of us knows the semblance of truth when it comes to recording an individual impression in drawing, color, and values […] It is pitiful that the great awakening power of Howard Pyle was not substantiated by some appreciation of the meaning and might of the sheer craft of painting. Had it been so, the class would stand for something better than tolerable (and steadily weakening) magazine illustration.

I know, that with my intense love of life, my emotional sense of things about me and the power to sustain enthusiasm would have carried me well into the nobler realms of interpretation had I not bitched myself with the accursed success in skin-deep pictures and illustrations! I know this is so – and all the passive talk about being content with the really-noble-art-of-illustrations-if-you-are-doing-your-best, etc., etc., is emphatically wrong, when day in and day out I feel those insufferable pangs of yearning to express my own life as it is in this beautiful home and these hills. […]
